Writer Russ Pitts’ New Digital Book is Available Today
Bellevue, WA (December 17, 2014) – Video game development is a career that many people fantasize about, but even with so many blogs, websites and video channels devoted to games, there’s still scarce information available about what it’s actually like to make a game. Enter Russ Pitts and his new digital book, How Video Games Are Made: My 16 Months Inside the Development of Defense Grid 2, available today.
Pitts (Polygon, The Escapist) recently spent sixteen months embedded at Hidden Path Entertainment, documenting the making of Defense Grid 2, DG2, for Vox Media’s video games website Polygon. The articles were eye opening. The first-of-its-kind series opened a rare, in-depth window into the secretive world of games development: no closed doors, a reporter amongst the developers capturing every nuance, good and bad. DG2 launched this past September, Pitts’ final Polygon piece made its way to the internet, and Pitts found himself with enough material to write an entire book.
“What was most surprising to me about the time I spent observing Hidden Path was how many moving parts there are in game development, and the sheer volume of intelligence required to make sense of even half of what goes into making a game. Playing Defense Grid 2, you’d never know how close it and almost every game ever made was to complete disaster at so many stages of development. And after watching one get made, the idea that video games get made at all now seems miraculous to me. That a game this good could come from such potential chaos is a testament to everyone involved,” explains Russ Pitts, freelance journalist and video producer, and Executive Director of the mental health charitytakethis.org.
