Turtle Rock is a team in Southern California formed by veterans of EA Westwood that was once part of Valve. They’ve survived until now mainly on contract projects, but what many people don’t know is they almost single-handedly designed Valve’s mega-hit multiplayer zombie game Left 4 Dead. Evolve will be their first major title as a fully independent studio, and it’s been generating massive amounts of buzz. Everywhere they preview the game it’s the most attended game of the show. People stand in line for hours just to watch other people play it.
I got a chance in the Fall of 2014 to visit Turtle Rock and spend time with its founders and a few Evolve team leads for Digital Trends. This is their story.
